Side effects and adverse drug reactions

Abstract

This article will look at the pharmacological aspects surrounding side effects of drugs, adverse drug reactions and the key differences between the two. It will also touch on the concept of drug ‘allergy’ and its meaning from a pharmacological perspective. Using examples, common and rare side effects will be illustrated and how side effects are classified discussed. The main types of adverse drug reactions will be examined and examples of each given, highlighting when a side effect becomes an adverse effect.
