Abstract

Teaching Architecture and Design is challenging but rewarding. I am an early career academic and a matured professional, who was introduced to teaching a few years ago. In this paper I will share my journey, and how my teaching practice derived from my lived experiences in professional practice. What has inspired and motivated me? What challenges did I have to face and how did I overcome them? What is the reaction of my students when I shared my professional experiences? Studying for my PGCAP has encouraged me to reflect on my teaching and made me realise that ‘to know thyself is the beginning of all wisdom’ (Socrates), and that as ‘humans we have unlimited powers of creativity’ especially when it comes to teaching (Robinson, 2017).
Authentic teaching practice, in my case, derives from my professional and personal identity, an accumulation of successes and failures over the years, personal and professional, happiness and sadness that helped me to become more adaptable and resilient. Authentic teaching practice in Architecture and Design, for me, resonates with sharing knowledge, experimentation, learning from live construction projects on site, observations, discussions, seminars, peer group learning. What have I learned and what I would do differently in my practice in the future?
