Abstract

In his chapter ‘The Post-Work Imagination’, Frayne offers a possible reading of the term ‘post-work’ as a style of enquiry designed to puncture today’s job-centred societies, where all manner of economic, social and psychological functions are tied to the phenomenon of employment. He suggests that through its exacting critique of work, along with a redemptive attempt to imagine alternative forms of social organisation, post-work studies remain valuable as an antidote to more reifying accounts of employment as an unalterable need. Frayne also considers the recent progress around policies like the shorter working week and universal basic income as possible signs of political headway, toward a less job-centred future”.
