Abstract

Abstract for A. Morris’ Assessment framework for safety, health, and environment (SHE) management systems and culture. Oct 2023

The assessment framework for safety, health, and environment (SHE) management systems and culture is very much required in today’s corporate climate, because of the multiple global challenges, disruption and distraction to management’s focus. Senior management’s focus is on top-line and bottom-line growth, share price and shareholder approval particularly because of its impact on the executives’ remuneration. It is particularly important that the CEO or president raises strategic thinking to include SHE on the agenda and play a transformative role to demonstrate the importance of SHE management systems and culture and the risks associated with not reviewing its performance particularly regarding investment.

The assessment framework will allow a comprehensive evaluation of the SHE management systems and culture to determine whether there is senior management’s leadership and commitment to provide a safe place of work for employees and contractors with a no harm strategy.

Further, this assessment allows the in-depth analysis to determine SHE priorities and the capability of the SHE team to deal with day-to-day operations, projects, management of change, and the investment needed, to be supported by senior management’s commitment to make this possible.

The assessment also supports the sustainability and E.S.G. goals within the organization and senior leadership support is essential with investment of time and funds to demonstrate the company’s commitment to these goals.

The assessment framework brings to life in a most vivid way the requirements of the SHE management systems and culture to the company, and whether they are being led, supported and performed by the company, not only must our SHE Culture show we care, but we must want to be the best.
