Abstract

This chapter discusses a number of important areas relating to the electric vehicles (EVs), EV smart charging, and interaction of smart charging with the smart grid. It explores the technologies currently available for charging EVs and the rules and regulations in place in countries around the world. The chapter also discusses the cyber-physical aspects of the smart charging system. Smart charging can be considered as a part of a cyber-physical energy system (CPES). The CPES represent a class of widely distributed and globally interconnected energy systems that integrate computation processes, communication elements, and control processes. The chapter examines a number of proposed smart charging schemes, each with its own purpose, benefits, and drawbacks. It provides a numerical example of computing a smart charging scheme using techniques from game theory. A charging strategy needs to be used to charge the EVs, without overloading the grid.
