There is a global endeavor for decarbonization where the energy sector has a critical role toward this goal. Decarbonization strategy in energy systems asks for a rapid increase in uptaking the low carbon renewable resources that will cause some operational issues as these renewable generations are less predictable and flexible than conventional fossil-fueled generations and therefore cause an increasing challenge for the security of supply. In such an environment, energy storage systems (ESSs) are identified as a priority to cope with this intermittency and create a more efficient electricity system. Conventional regulatory regimes behave with ESSs like a generator. This issue is the main barrier that affected investment in ESSs.
To remove the mentioned investment barrier, a market structure is required to value the flexibility offered by ESSs by considering it as a complementing service rather than a competing element with the current network and generation assets. This chapter is an effort to analyze the current progress in the integration of electric energy storage systems (EESSs) into the existing energy and balancing mechanisms. We start by a systematic review of the publications in this field and then by providing a detailed formulation of the problem, highlight the status quo, challenges, and outlook of the works in this area.
