Prediction performance improvement for highly imbalanced monitoring data (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Li, Y., Maguire, L., McCann, M., & Johnston, A. (2010, June). Prediction performance improvement for highly imbalanced monitoring data. Presented at 7th International Conference on Condition Monitoring and Machinery Failure Prevention Technologies 2010, Stratford-upon-Avon, UK

In engineering applications, we often face highly imbalanced data problems where majority of the data are from a condition and small minority are from others. Directly learning classifier on such problems would be prone to a biased classification per... Read More about Prediction performance improvement for highly imbalanced monitoring data.

Helmholtz pulse propagation & spatially-dispersive light (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Christian, J., Hodgkinson, T., McDonald, G., & Chamorro-Posada, P. (2010, June). Helmholtz pulse propagation & spatially-dispersive light. Presented at Nonlinear Photonics (NP), Karlsruhe, Germany

We present the first detailed account of modelling pulses in Helmholtz-type nonlinear systems with both temporal and spatial dispersion. Exact analytical solitons will be reported, and their stability examined through mathematical analysis and comput... Read More about Helmholtz pulse propagation & spatially-dispersive light.

Kaleidoscope lasers - Complexity in simple optical systems (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Christian, J., McDonald, G., & Huang, J. (2010, June). Kaleidoscope lasers - Complexity in simple optical systems. Presented at Nonlinear Photonics (NP), Karlsruhe, Germany

We present the first detailed account of modelling kaleidoscope laser modes where the equivalent Fresnel number Neq and magnification M may assume arbitrary values. The convergence toward circularity is also investigated through extensive numerical c... Read More about Kaleidoscope lasers - Complexity in simple optical systems.

Helmholtz dark solitons at nonlinear defocusing interfaces (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Sanchez Curto, J., Chamorro-Posada, P., & McDonald, G. (2010, June). Helmholtz dark solitons at nonlinear defocusing interfaces. Presented at Nonlinear Photonics (NP, Karlsruhe, Germany

Dark Kerr soliton refraction at planar boundaries is analysed and simulated for the first time. A universal law of Kerr spatial soliton refraction is derived. Strong parameter sensitivity of gray soliton refraction is also uncovered.

Promoting green construction in India through industry - academia collaboration (2010)
Journal Article
Alshawi, M., Egbu, C., & Arif, M. (2010). Promoting green construction in India through industry - academia collaboration. Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice, 136(3), 128-131. https://doi.org/10.1061/%28ASCE%29EI.1943-5541.0000019

Developing economies have seen a big jump in construction activities recently. In India, the shortage of 41 million housing units to accommodate the existing population has resulted in a flurry of construction activities (Tiwari 2001). Going green in... Estimation of critical occupancy values for UK motorways from traffic loop detectors (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Al-Obaedi, J., & Yousif, S. (2010, June). Estimation of critical occupancy values for UK motorways from traffic loop detectors. Presented at Salford Postgraduate Annual Research Conference, The University of Salford, Salford, United Kingdom

Occupancy is the percent of time a traffic loop detector embedded in the road pavement is occupied by vehicles. This term is usually used as a substitution for the traffic density which is not feasible to obtain from detectors. One of the recent a...
