Automatic segmentation for breast skin-line (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Zhang, Z., Lu, J., & Yip, Y. (2010, June). Automatic segmentation for breast skin-line. Presented at 10th IEEE International Conference on Computer and Information Technology, Bradford, UK

The accurate segmentation of breast in mammograms is critical for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) of breast cancer. The challenges of breast segmentation come from tissue superimposition, low contrast and low visible breast boundary, noise areas and a... Bastien, N., Arthur, S., Wallis, S., & Scholz, M. (2010, June). Runoff infiltration: A desktop case study. Presented at NOVATECH, 7th International Conference on Sustainable Techniques and Strategies in Urban Water Management, Lyon, France

Recording the creative gesture (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Rooney, J. (2010, June). Recording the creative gesture. Presented at Art Promotes Science, Science Promotes Art, University of Salford

The project will posit a question of how to visualise the creative gesture of a city. Every city has its own creative story. The subject matter to be explored in this project will be curated from recordings of past and present narratives. Data will t... Read More about Recording the creative gesture.

Mining time series data : case of predicting consumption patterns in steel industry (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Fazel, A., Saraee, M., & Shamsinejad, P. (2010, June). Mining time series data : case of predicting consumption patterns in steel industry. Presented at The 2nd International Conference on Software Engineering and Data Mining, Chengdu, China

Analyzing and predicting with Time series is a method which used in different fields, including consumption pattern analyzing and predicting. In this paper, required amount of inventory items have been predicted with time series. At first, desired da... Prediction performance improvement for highly imbalanced monitoring data (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Li, Y., Maguire, L., McCann, M., & Johnston, A. (2010, June). Prediction performance improvement for highly imbalanced monitoring data. Presented at 7th International Conference on Condition Monitoring and Machinery Failure Prevention Technologies 2010, Stratford-upon-Avon, UK

In engineering applications, we often face highly imbalanced data problems where majority of the data are from a condition and small minority are from others. Directly learning classifier on such problems would be prone to a biased classification per... Read More about Prediction performance improvement for highly imbalanced monitoring data.

Helmholtz pulse propagation & spatially-dispersive light (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Christian, J., Hodgkinson, T., McDonald, G., & Chamorro-Posada, P. (2010, June). Helmholtz pulse propagation & spatially-dispersive light. Presented at Nonlinear Photonics (NP), Karlsruhe, Germany

We present the first detailed account of modelling pulses in Helmholtz-type nonlinear systems with both temporal and spatial dispersion. Exact analytical solitons will be reported, and their stability examined through mathematical analysis and comput... Read More about Helmholtz pulse propagation & spatially-dispersive light.

Kaleidoscope lasers - Complexity in simple optical systems (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Christian, J., McDonald, G., & Huang, J. (2010, June). Kaleidoscope lasers - Complexity in simple optical systems. Presented at Nonlinear Photonics (NP), Karlsruhe, Germany

We present the first detailed account of modelling kaleidoscope laser modes where the equivalent Fresnel number Neq and magnification M may assume arbitrary values. The convergence toward circularity is also investigated through extensive numerical c... Read More about Kaleidoscope lasers - Complexity in simple optical systems.

Helmholtz dark solitons at nonlinear defocusing interfaces (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Sanchez Curto, J., Chamorro-Posada, P., & McDonald, G. (2010, June). Helmholtz dark solitons at nonlinear defocusing interfaces. Presented at Nonlinear Photonics (NP, Karlsruhe, Germany

Dark Kerr soliton refraction at planar boundaries is analysed and simulated for the first time. A universal law of Kerr spatial soliton refraction is derived. Strong parameter sensitivity of gray soliton refraction is also uncovered.

Offender perceptions of criminal opportunities in vulnerable residential areas: a case study in a U.K North West inner city (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Coulton, J., Jackson, W., Jeffery, R., & Patel, T. (2010, June). Offender perceptions of criminal opportunities in vulnerable residential areas: a case study in a U.K North West inner city. Presented at Stockholm Criminology Symposium, Stockholm, Sweden

This paper details an academic study, commissioned by police and local authority practitioners, and the challenges faced therein, within a vulnerable residential area of an inner city in the UK. This area was identified as a site for study because of... Learning lessons from MacPherson? The police and racist incidents in Northern Ireland (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Patel, T. (2010, June). Learning lessons from MacPherson? The police and racist incidents in Northern Ireland. Presented at Stockholm Criminology Symposium, Stockholm, Sweden

Given the increase in the reporting of racist incidents in Northern Ireland involving attacks against members of its black and minority ethnic population, this paper focuses on the degree to which these racist incidents are successfully policed by th...
