Prediction performance improvement for highly imbalanced monitoring data (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Li, Y., Maguire, L., McCann, M., & Johnston, A. (2010, June). Prediction performance improvement for highly imbalanced monitoring data. Presented at 7th International Conference on Condition Monitoring and Machinery Failure Prevention Technologies 2010, Stratford-upon-Avon, UK

In engineering applications, we often face highly imbalanced data problems where majority of the data are from a condition and small minority are from others. Directly learning classifier on such problems would be prone to a biased classification per... Read More about Prediction performance improvement for highly imbalanced monitoring data.

Helmholtz pulse propagation & spatially-dispersive light (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Christian, J., Hodgkinson, T., McDonald, G., & Chamorro-Posada, P. (2010, June). Helmholtz pulse propagation & spatially-dispersive light. Presented at Nonlinear Photonics (NP), Karlsruhe, Germany

We present the first detailed account of modelling pulses in Helmholtz-type nonlinear systems with both temporal and spatial dispersion. Exact analytical solitons will be reported, and their stability examined through mathematical analysis and comput... Read More about Helmholtz pulse propagation & spatially-dispersive light.

Kaleidoscope lasers - Complexity in simple optical systems (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Christian, J., McDonald, G., & Huang, J. (2010, June). Kaleidoscope lasers - Complexity in simple optical systems. Presented at Nonlinear Photonics (NP), Karlsruhe, Germany

We present the first detailed account of modelling kaleidoscope laser modes where the equivalent Fresnel number Neq and magnification M may assume arbitrary values. The convergence toward circularity is also investigated through extensive numerical c... Read More about Kaleidoscope lasers - Complexity in simple optical systems.

Helmholtz dark solitons at nonlinear defocusing interfaces (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Sanchez Curto, J., Chamorro-Posada, P., & McDonald, G. (2010, June). Helmholtz dark solitons at nonlinear defocusing interfaces. Presented at Nonlinear Photonics (NP, Karlsruhe, Germany

Dark Kerr soliton refraction at planar boundaries is analysed and simulated for the first time. A universal law of Kerr spatial soliton refraction is derived. Strong parameter sensitivity of gray soliton refraction is also uncovered.

Making low carbon England (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Hodson, M., & Marvin, S. (2010, June). Making low carbon England. Presented at Architectural Association, London

Offender perceptions of criminal opportunities in vulnerable residential areas: a case study in a U.K North West inner city (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Coulton, J., Jackson, W., Jeffery, R., & Patel, T. (2010, June). Offender perceptions of criminal opportunities in vulnerable residential areas: a case study in a U.K North West inner city. Presented at Stockholm Criminology Symposium, Stockholm, Sweden

This paper details an academic study, commissioned by police and local authority practitioners, and the challenges faced therein, within a vulnerable residential area of an inner city in the UK. This area was identified as a site for study because of... Learning lessons from MacPherson? The police and racist incidents in Northern Ireland (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Patel, T. (2010, June). Learning lessons from MacPherson? The police and racist incidents in Northern Ireland. Presented at Stockholm Criminology Symposium, Stockholm, Sweden

Given the increase in the reporting of racist incidents in Northern Ireland involving attacks against members of its black and minority ethnic population, this paper focuses on the degree to which these racist incidents are successfully policed by th... Estimation of critical occupancy values for UK motorways from traffic loop detectors (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Al-Obaedi, J., & Yousif, S. (2010, June). Estimation of critical occupancy values for UK motorways from traffic loop detectors. Presented at Salford Postgraduate Annual Research Conference, The University of Salford, Salford, United Kingdom

Occupancy is the percent of time a traffic loop detector embedded in the road pavement is occupied by vehicles. This term is usually used as a substitution for the traffic density which is not feasible to obtain from detectors. One of the recent a... An application of the activity-based costing for the management of project overheads to increase profit during the construction stage (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Jaya, N., Pathirage, C., & Sutrisna, M. (2010, June). An application of the activity-based costing for the management of project overheads to increase profit during the construction stage. Presented at SPARC 2010 Conference, Mary Seacole, the University of Salford, United Kingdom

The traditional costing system was originally developed in England when industrial engineers and cost accountants applied a primary concept of cost accounting systems to minimise the risk of bankruptcy during times of recession. The conventional Bill... Read More about An application of the activity-based costing for the management of project overheads to increase profit during the construction stage.

The resilience of urban green infrastructure: a case study of Runcorn, UK (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Wallbank, N., & James, P. (2010, June). The resilience of urban green infrastructure: a case study of Runcorn, UK. Presented at Urban green space postgraduate colloquium, Leeds Metropolitan University

Vegetation incorporated into urban environments has an ecological and a social value which helps sustain public health and well being. What is not known is how resilient urban vegetation is. If urban vegetation is likely to change over time then this... Read More about The resilience of urban green infrastructure: a case study of Runcorn, UK.

Online identity, reputation and professional practice (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Hook, A., & Bodell, S. (2010, June). Online identity, reputation and professional practice. Presented at COT Annual Conference 2010, Brighton UK

Verdonck and Ryan (2008) suggest that as occupational therapists we need to embrace technology and move with the times as we “can no longer afford to be technophobes” (p255). Occupational therapists are using the internet to gather information, to en... Read More about Online identity, reputation and professional practice.

Using negotiated assessments in higher education (2010)
Presentation / Conference
Hook, A., & Bodell, S. (2010, June). Using negotiated assessments in higher education. Poster presented at COT Annual Conference 2010, Brighton

By negotiating their assessment students gain an opportunity to develop clearer understandings of themselves as learners and their own learning processes within their own cultural and professional environment. Our main consideration in deve... Read More about Using negotiated assessments in higher education.
