Measurement of the optical properties of gold at cryogenic temperatures (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

Optical constants of gold are measured at cryogenic temperatures. The imaginary part of epsilon exhibits a drop at longer wavelengths. This directly demonstrates that performance of metal-based optical devices can be improved by cryogenic cooling.

Curved waveguide Bragg gratings on a chip (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

We demonstrate curved waveguide Bragg gratings on an SOI chip. Our approach allows long Bragg gratings to be fabricated on an extremely small area, avoiding write-field stitching errors, typically introduced in the fabrication process.

Active and passive nanophotonics for information systems applications (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

This paper explores the role of nanotechnology with focus on nanophotonics in dielectric, metal, and semiconductor inhomogeneous metamaterials and devices for optical communications, information and signal processing, and sensing.

The emotive city (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

How can a city, with its connections, people and architecture be viewed as a living cultural artefact? Every city has at least one ArtSpace; larger urban conurbations have a multitude of spaces devoted to art. The ArtSpace is a venue designed to con... Read More about The emotive city.

Using the knowledge transfer partnership model as a method of transferring BIM and lean process related knowledge between academia and industry: A case study approach (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

This paper looks at the vehicle of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between academia and business and how successful it is in reaching its range of objectives and developing theoretical and practical educational materials for BIM curriculums.... The role of design in enabling sustainability in small scale textile manufacturing: A case study of small scale textile manufacture in Wales (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

The paper examines the relationship between design and sustainability in a policy context of sustainable development, in Wales, UK, a devolved Government with a legal remit to sustainable development.
A case study approach has been used alongside g... Read More about The role of design in enabling sustainability in small scale textile manufacturing: A case study of small scale textile manufacture in Wales.

The resilience of urban trees (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

Trees incorporated into urban environments have both ecological and social values which help sustain public health and well being. What is not known is how resilient urban trees are to the challenges, including climate change, of the 21st century. If... Read More about The resilience of urban trees.

Moving forward – developing resources for women with breast cancer at the end of hospital based treatment (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

When women inish hospital-based treatment for breast cancer and become a breast cancer survivor, they experience a distinct 're-entry' point in their lives. For many this is a time of crisis (Allen, 2009). While breast cancer patients have a range of... Determination of optimal CT exposure factors for lung lesions using an anthropomorphic chest phantom for SPECT-CT (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

PURPOSE: SPECT‐CT is a valuable modality for diagnosis and staging of primary and secondary
malignant disease and also diagnosing benign conditions. CT incurs a significant radiation burden;
consequently CT acquisition parameters require optimisati... Read More about Determination of optimal CT exposure factors for lung lesions using an anthropomorphic chest phantom for SPECT-CT.

From ‘the people’ to ‘the citizen’: Municipal leisure in Manchester’s urban parks (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

This paper examines the evolution of the municipal public park in Manchester from the Victorian people’s park to the Edwardian (and later) citizen’s park. The linguistic shift from the people to the citizen is mirrored in the change of emphasis from... Read More about From ‘the people’ to ‘the citizen’: Municipal leisure in Manchester’s urban parks.
