Biography Luke Harrison is a Senior Lecturer in Sound at the University of Salford. With a career spanning various roles in the creative industries, Luke has worked as a musician, musical director, recording studio engineer, and sound designer for various performance types. His wide experience has given him a rounded sense of the creative arts and the place of sound within it.
Since 2022, Luke has been serving as the Academic Lead for Higher Technical Skills at the University of Salford. In this role, he has been instrumental in developing and overseeing the delivery of courses that fall under the broad category of Higher Technical Skills. His work involves collaboration with various departments and external organisations to ensure that the curriculum meets industry standards and addresses the skills gap in the technical education sector. As part of his role, Luke successfully led the university's application for the accreditation of three higher technical qualifications that are delivered through the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology.
In 2024, Luke was recognised as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Authority, reflecting his significant contributions to higher education and his commitment to advancing teaching and learning practices.
Luke's research on sound for heritage spaces includes his latest work titled ‘Rapid Prototyping of Soundscapes for Heritage Spaces’. He co-hosted the ‘Salford Sound Symposium’ in July 2022. Luke is particularly interested in where technical and scientific approaches converge with holistic analysis and critique to develop a rounded understanding of sound recording and production. Luke's research also focuses on improving technical education, aiming to enhance the quality and effectiveness of technical training programs.
In his teaching role, Luke strives for excellence and aims to evolve pedagogical methods to match industry practice as well as theory. He currently teaches across levels 4 to 7 on BA(Hons) Media & Performance, BA(Hons) Technical Theatre (Production and Design), and MA Screen Acting.
When not thinking about sound, Luke enjoys historical reading, tabletop gaming, racing sailing dinghies, and running.
