Biography Eddie completed a first degree in Sports Science and Physiology at the University of Leeds. Following graduation, Eddie began to work for the NHS as an Exercise Physiologist in Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) at the Wirral Heart Support Centre (WHSC). This role involved exercise testing prescription for patients with cardiovascular (CVD) conditions, as well as delivering education to patient and their families. During his time at WHSC, Eddie successfully completed the ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiologist certification (Level 4) which he still holds. After 5 years at WHSC, Eddie moved to Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust (SRFT) to take up a Band 7 post of Highly Specialised Exercise Practitioner within the CR team. Whilst at SRFT, Eddie started a Professional Doctorate to develop his professional practice and to become a practitioner-researcher. The area of research for the doctorate was incorporating patients with intermittent claudication into CR programmes to increase service provision for people with peripheral artery disease – supervised by Professor Malcom Granat. Whilst working in CR within the UK Eddie has also been involved in the development of CR services abroad, working with the Bermuda Heart Foundation. This involved delivering patients education sessions during Bermuda Heart Month and supporting the training of exercise instructors who came over to the UK to gain the BACPR Exercise Instructor qualification.

Eddie moved into academia in 2016 to work at University of Salford lecturing on the BSc Exercise, Nutrition and Health – now called Nutrition and Exercise as Medicine. Here he developed the Level 6 module in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation as well as helping to developed and deliver the MSc Clinical Exercise Physiology programme at the university. Eddie have also help setup and supervise a Phase 4 CR programme alongside two BACPR Exercise Instructors at the University of Salford Sports Centre. This programme provides ongoing support for Salford patients following their programme at SRFT. It also allows our students to gain hands-on experience of working with cardiac patients as part of their undergraduate degree. Eddie is a professional member of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and British Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR), and currently has an honorary contract with the CR team at SRFT.

Eddie is a BASES Certified Exercise Practitioner and is currently the BASES representation to the BACPR’s Exercise Professionals Group (EPG). Over the past 15 years Eddie has also been involved in other areas of exercise rehabilitation including diabetes, pulmonary disorders, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (PoTS). Eddie worked with PoTS UK and Syncope Trust & Reflex Anoxic Seizures (STARS) to develop guidance and recommendations for exercise and activity, as well published research on the national perspective of people with the rare condition of PoTS. Eddie’s current research is focused on exercise rehabilitation for people with cardiovascular disease, particularly peripheral artery disease (PAD).
