Sep 2023. The IGNITION Summer School is in good company, sharing the shortlist with other high-profile community projects from the likes of University College London, The National Grid and Jacobs. The full shortlist for the Inclusion Programme of the Year 2023 category.

The purpose of the IGNITION engineering summer school is to bring together Year 12 students from across Greater Manchester to explore digital fabrication, engineering skills, and electronic design, as well as careers in the STEM fields. During the two-night residential programme, the students become part of a race team and construct their remote-controlled cars using digital fabrication equipment, 3D printers, laser cutters, electronic tools and other technology for the design and manufacturing of their cars available in the Morson Maker Space.

The key objective for IGNITION is to ensure attendees get an authentic experience of being Salford students by learning a range of new skills.

HEIF Award to establish the 3D Unity Centre for Excellence @MediaCity

Description This HEIF fund set out a new skills partnership with Salford’s leading education institutions, The Landing (known as HOST - Home of Skills and Technology) and the University of Salford, have partnered to stay at the forefront of educational excellence and build on the region’s industrial heritage.

Dr. Maria Stukoff, Director of the University’s Maker Space, a digital fabrication facility sponsored by Morson Group, leads the project. She will serve as a consultant to the Innovation Hub, managed by IN4.0 Group who manage HOST, supporting skill development for the esports and XR immersive communities. This partnership aims to strengthen Salford's Digital Strategy and create a talent pipeline for the digital and tech industries.

With extensive experience in the public and private sectors, including roles at BBC Academy and PlayStationFirst, Dr. Stukoff is a strong advocate for the transformative power of digital skills. She emphasises the opportunity to address the skills gap and drive innovation, benefiting local communities, industry partners, and young people’s futures.

Jo Purves, Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Salford, highlights the collaboration’s potential to create real pathways for talent and advance industrial applications of immersive technology, positioning Salford as a leading hub for tech skills and innovation.
