Project Title Das Neue Bauen für den Neuen Menschen. Zur Wandlung und Wirkung des Menschenbildes in der Architektur der 1920er Jahre in Deutschland
Project Description After the First World War and together with the formation of the Weimar Republic a change in perspective and outlook can be discerned according to which the current cultural situation was widely perceived as advanced and superior to all previous ones. The modern person - the Neue Mensch - was discussed as a representative of this new generation and it was hoped that he/she would achieve a higher stage of consciousness and evolution compared to previous generations. Based on such suppositions architects, planners as well as politicians discussed a complete renewal of cities and housing, built for the Neue Mensch. Technological advancements - particularly ferro concrete construction methods - fuelled the belief to live in a complete new and improved time. With the help of technology it was believed to be possible to reach greater heights in the development of mankind. In focussing on social housing, this thesis discusses a range of stances, plans and case studies where architects contributed to the search and definition of the idea of a Neue Mensch between 1919 and 1933.
