Biography | Paul Hampson is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and academic with a professional interest in many areas of engineering including finite element analysis (FEA), multi-physics, and advanced materials. He has a BEng (Hons) in Aeronautical Engineering, Diploma in Professional Studies, and a PhD in Composite Material Impact Analysis from the University of Salford. He also has an accredited management qualification from Ashorne Hill Management College and a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice. Paul has a wide range of professional experience in different sectors of engineering. He started his career as a Support Engineer at British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL), where he developed and integrated a new plant information system for monitoring processing of uranium. For this work he received a BNFL recognition award. He then pursued his PhD at the University of Salford, where he studied the fluid-structure interaction of metallic and composite plates subjected to dynamic loading. During his PhD, he also worked as a part-time teacher and graduate teaching assistant, assisting in various subjects such as structural mechanics, engineering materials, and finite element analysis. He also conducted contracted consultancy work developing training materials for external companies. After completing his PhD, Paul joined Aircelle UK Ltd (Safran Group); an aerospace company specialising in aircraft engine nacelles and thrust reversers where he worked as a Materials Engineer. He authored and reviewed composite related technical data sheets and procedures, trained personnel and developed mechanical testing techniques. He then moved to Glyndŵr University (Wrexham) as a Lecturer of Composites Engineering where his office was located in the Advanced Composite Training and Development Centre at Airbus, Broughton. During this employment, he was involved with the development of an MSc course in advanced composite materials and trained Airbus personnel in composite manufacturing methods for the A350 XWB and future projects. In 2011, Paul moved to the University of Salford as a Lecturer in Aircraft Structures where he taught structural mechanics, advanced materials, and finite element analysis. In 2020, Paul then joined a college University Centre to develop their higher education engineering portfolio before going on to work as a Senior Engineer at BAE Systems' FalconWorks. In 2023, Paul returned to the University of Salford where he is now a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. Research: 2005 to 2008 - Member of the Stress Analysis Research Group 2023 to Present - Member of the Multi-physics Engineering Sciences Group Paul has published several papers in journals and presented his research at international symposiums.
