Description | The mission of the Media, Science, and Technology Studies Scholarly Interest Group (MSTS SIG) is to promote work in the history and philosophy of science and technology; to provide a common meeting ground for scholars engaged in such research methods as the social construction of technology, actor-network theory, and the sociology of scientific knowledge; to connect these scholars with those engaging in media archaeology and media technologies; to encourage cross-disciplinary conversation and collaboration among these scholars; and to support collaborative scholarship between MSTS SIG members and the SCMS membership at large. In service of this mission, the MSTS SIG will: Highlight key issues within the diverse fields of STS and bring them to the awareness of the SCMS community through special panels at the annual conference; Promote the inclusion of science and technology scholarship in JCMS and support SCMS initiatives by offering expertise and perspective on topics related to science and technology studies; Seek to develop official connections to STS professional societies, including the formation of media studies interest groups within such groups; Identify and promote opportunities for the publication of work in media studies in journals identified with STS; Create opportunities for graduate students to engage with experienced scholars in a way that supports robust discussion, innovative research, and preparation for a scholarly career; Serve as a central resource for reporters and scholars seeking informed commentary on various aspects of science and technology in mass media; Provide a venue for discussions of pedagogical practices for courses in science media and media technology; and Create a venue for critical discussion of science and technology studies across various forms of media, including film, television, print, and digital forms. |
