Abstract

Like so many other prominent commanders of Panzer divisions, von Manteuffel gained his first military experience in the Great War, only to be accepted later in 1919 into the Reichswehr, where Heinz Guderian appreciated his talents as a commander in the mid-1930s and helped his career progress. At the time, like many of his colleagues, he was a staunch supporter of the Third Reich, and from 1939 on he rose rapidly through the military ranks to the rank of General der Panzertruppen .. However, in 1945 his figure did not fade away, as others did, but instead contributed significantly to the debate on the future of the West German armed forces and became a Member of Parliament in 1953. His post-war career ended when he was brought to court by an execution order he had issued in January 1944.
