Abstract

In this conference presentation, we shall describe recent
simulations in a novel ocean wave energy system (floating
surface piercing) device.

We will review the fundamentals of wave energy physics, some
other recent developments in wave energy harvesting devices
and then describe the new simulations with ANSYS FLUENT FV
software.

First we provide a brief overview of activities in renewable
energy systems simulation ( MHD ocean wave,
geothermal etc) conducted by the MPESG team at Salford
University including MSc, PhD and BEng projects supervised by
the MPESG team members in renewable energy systems.

We then return to the novel study and identify superior
performance achieved by 2 D simulations for a range of wave
conditions (different order hydrodynamic wave theories)
including velocity, pressure and vorticity contour plots
visualization.

Pathways for future work are also outlined including 3 D
simulations and also fluid structure interaction
(hydroelasticity).
