Abstract

The United Kingdom has convicted the first female under the Serious Crime Act for controlling and coercive behaviour. This case not only illustrates that males can be the victims of domestic violence, including psychological violence, but additionally challenges other stereotypes about controlling and coercive behaviour in illustrating that the perpetrators can be well educated, come from nice families, and be young (in their teens). The importance of recognising signs of controlling and coercive behaviour and educating people about the pervasiveness of this problem can help to assist victims and in prevention.
