Abstract

Do students benefit from the use of Electronic Management Information Systems in Social Work Education Programmes?

Research and practice informs us that social work and nursing students need to develop effective recording skills to deliver and evidence ‘high quality person centred care and support’ in practice. (Skills for Care:2014:3)
Some students come armed with experience of technological processes, and feel confident in the world of human computer interaction (HCI). However, many are not fully digitally literate and struggle when asked to hone these skills on placement, alongside the development of their practice. Monk’s (2000), approach
to a ‘user-centred design’ is core to the ethos of our project.
This longitudinal research project began by listening and responding to the voices of students who were
challenged by professional standards of recording whilst on placement and the employers who were providing the student placements.
A unique collaboration between the Social Work Practice Learning Team at The University of Salford and Social Care Network Solutions (SCN) has produced a teaching programme and ‘real world’ database which students utilise when developing such skills in a HEI environment, providing a safe space for
experimentation and the opportunity to practice. The repetition of learning these skills encourages the ‘messy learning’, which Schon, (1987:3) refers to.
The workshop will share the experience of developing the use of innovative technologies, to enhance the professional development of students and their written recording skills. Participants will:
be introduced to the technological database system created by SCN
gain an immersive experience of recording skills by using the innovative system
listen to voices of students’ experiences
have the opportunity of transferring knowledge gained into their own workplace/setting
We will share our research and emerging findings to demonstrate the student experience using innovative
technological approaches. This workshop will reach widely across a range of health and social care
professions, creating an interprofessional dialogue and scope for learning together. We welcome, students
practice educators from HEI’s and practice settings.
N.B. No prior experience of the use of electronic databases is required.
Joint delivery of the workshop by social work practice educators and Social Care Network team members
A listen and try approach – participants will hear about the project and then will model the bespoke
‘live tool’, created especially for the International Conference Practice Teaching and Field Education Conference
Participants will be asked to work in small groups to reinforce learning and to develop their own ideas to take away
