On 4 December 2016, Italians voted on a significant constitutional reform proposal, only the third constitutional reform proposal in the history of the Italian Republic. The proposal promised to rewrite about a third of the Constitution. They were proposed by Matteo Renzi (the leader of the Democratic Party and Prime Minister) with the apparent aim of overcoming the long-term deficiencies of the Italian political system. The proposals, however, split the Italian parties and the Democratic Party itself. The impact of the vote was the immediate resignation of Renzi as Prime Minister.
