Abstract
"Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible.” Paul Klee.
Randall’s work focuses on artists residencies in industrial settings as the context for new work, and she has established innovative ways of interpreting industrial heritage through contemporary arts practice, demonstrating how the visual arts can be a mechanism for cultural regeneration and reengagement. Randall has a history of working with post-industrial sites to harness toxic aftermath or ‘spoiled’ environments to create artworks , and, through public engagement activities, reconnecting communities with their industrial heritage.
The series of works Randall created for 'Open Spaces' questioned ideas about permanence and transcience, about the passing of time and the tide of history.
They celebrated renewal and change, and make us aware of life’s impermanence, of the constant state of building, demolishing, flux and change.
The works made strong links between the shared textile industry heritage of Rossendale and Bocholt , introducing elements from the Rossendale industrial landscape into Bocholt .
Randall created a series of new sculpture during the Residency - Bocholt 'sheds' and architectural structures , responding directly and immediately to the place.
Some of the acclaimed series of works, ‘Sheds of Rochdale’ and ‘Sheds of Rossendale’ werebrought to Bocholt and reconfigured with the new Bocholt sheds in a dynamic sculpture installation.
In the ‘Age of the Refugee’, the works have poignant nuances, referring to the idea of shelter, refuge, referencing the improvised human shelters constructed from available materials in shanty towns all over the world. Part found-object, part sculpture construction, they also play with sculptural language and notions of the beautiful and ugly.
