Abstract

This chapter considers our collaborative Practice-as-Research in performance as a mode of memory-making and specifically as a way of activating and exploring the subjective experience of déjà vu associated with temporal lobe epilepsy. Utilising constructive memory theory, we identify ways in which our live performance space recalls, reconstructs and reformulates memory. We are particularly interested in the ‘dual process’ (Brown 2004: 127) explanations of déjà vu and notions of ‘memory conflict’ (Martin, Fiacchoni and Kohler 2015: 173), as they relate to the live mixing of media, as well as the improvised exchanges that characterise our collaboration. In the chapter we understand the collaborative performance we create, like memory, to be a ‘complex and notoriously fallible process’ (Coetzee and Rau 2009: 1). Our analysis focuses particularly on a ‘merged process’ (Brown 2004: 130) model, one of the dual process explanations of déjà vu, as it offers a revealing discourse for the intersubjective way in which we have created and remembered memory through performance.
