Abstract

Odin's Gully is a collaborative project between photographer Andrew Brooks, and sound artist Simon Connor. It is an investigation into new forms of landscape documentation and representation, utilising HD video and immersive spatial audio to recreate the artistic landscape in a gallery environment.

The installation charts subtle nuances and changes that take place over the course of one year in a specific valley, hidden in the Peak District.

Brooks and Connor are visiting the location repeatedly over the four seasons, capturing and documenting every detail of the natural habitat and the changes that it undertakes ; the subtle changes in light and shade, the extreme variations in weather, and varying dynamics in audio.

This 7min piece utilises Large scale HD projection and a multi-speaker array, allowing the audience to explore the re-created environment in an immersive hyper-real setting. Tiny details are recreated in crisp detail, both aurally and visually via High Definition digital sound and image.

This installation is first of many exploring the capture and representation of the 'digital landscape'. The project questions what new opportunities are available via HD video and spatial audio which were traditionally achieved via pencil and paintbrush by painters such as Turner or Constable?
