Abstract

This lecture/demonstration presents my current explorations, using live media practice to explore and share key pieces of music from my past. Working from a single song, which has a particular affective resonance for me, I aim to explore this sonic nostalgia as the ‘repetition of the unrepeatable, materialization of the immaterial’ (Boym 2001 xvii). Such repetitions/materialisations will be generated through mixing sound, voice, image and objects related to and resonant with my experience and memories of the song.

The act of creating and mixing in real time, using digital media, represents a way of ‘making new’ in response to this nostalgic impulse and sets out to explore how the ‘permanent present’ of the digital world can intersect with the ‘irrevocable past’ (Estevez 2011: 109) suggested by the notion of nostalgia. I will also engage with Boym’s two strands of nostalgia through specifically exploring and framing the live media practice I create in the lecture/demonstration through ‘restorative nostalgia’ which ‘stresses nostos and attempts a transhistorical reconstruction of the lost home’ and ‘reflective nostalgia’ which ‘thrives in algia, the longing itself and delays the homecoming – wistfully, ironically, desperately’ (2001: xviii).
