International mobility and knowledge in social science and humanities research

Abstract
The mobility of researchers across national borders has been seen to be a key component in the transmission, translation and generation of knowledge. Indeed, research from the UK, for example, indicates that non-citizens are more productive, produce higher quality work, and are more internationally connected than their local peers (Bekhradnia & Sastry 2005; Adams 2013; BIS 2011). Other work has investigated the different modes of mobility and their distinct outcomes (Ackers 2008). The majority of this work, however, has focused on practices in a relatively narrow range of disciplines in natural sciences. Moreover, little work in this area has explored the relationships between modes of travel, host contexts and the range of outcomes which are produced. This paper presents an analysis of the experiences and practices of mobility and its outcomes from a study of social science and humanities doctorate holders from 13 countries.
