Abstract
This paper reviews the archaeology for Romano-British rural settlement in the southern part of North West England (the Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester area). It looks at the influence of climate and social structure on the distribtion and character of these rural settlements, noting continuity in the dispersed, native-style, settlements from the Iron Age landscape.
