Abstract

Many Western and East Asian countries have found a 'haven' in China for those manufacturing industries losing their competitive edge. However, many western firms have lost millions trying to make in-roads into the sector. An increasingly confident breed of indigenous company is now emerging to take the lead in the development of new products, and where design and its management will play a significant role in its success. An exploratory case illustration is presented, supported by a substantive literature review, which examines the adoption of design management within the Chinese manufacturing industry, and the implications for Western organisations collaborating through international joint ventures. General conclusions are drawn where there is strong correspondence.
