Abstract

The Catalogue 'Geballte Gegenwart' was published on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Festival 'Neue Musik Rumlingen' in 2005.

The Catalogue not only documents 15 years of new music, sound events and sound installations as commissioned for the festival but also includes contributions of artists and art historians. It gives an overview of the present state of contemporary New Music and Sound Art.

I was commissioned to write a case study of the motivation and inspiration for and practicalities of the site specific durational sound installation/performance 'STETS' that I contributed to the festival in 2003.

The essay addresses the following questions:
- general thoughts about site specific Sound Art
-intervention
-intrusion
-acceptance

Investigation into the particular requirements concerning this particular work:
-geography - the region, the valley, the flora
-time and duration - 9 hours during one night
-acoustics - natural and imposed
-expectation

Description of practicalities of my work
-material - found on the site vs introduced
-consideration of installation in a natural environment

The essay concluded with creative meditation about various aspects that my work addressed.
-silence
-improvisation
-time
-environment
