This book chapter, part of the volume Word, Sound and Music in Radio Drama, describes the process of writing an orchestral score for a BBC Radio drama (The Kraken Wakes, Savvy Productions/ BBC, 2015) designed to be performed live alongside the actors performing the drama in front of a live studio audience. This hybrid form of concert/studio performance recalls the production techniques of early radio drama. It also gave the creative team the opportunity to reference musical styles previously used predominantly in film music in the 1950s and 1960s.
