Abstract

This chapter will explore the experience of PTG among people living with HIV. First, HIV and its impact as well as the daily stressors associated with living with HIV are outlined. Experiences of posttraumatic stress, including the impact of HIV-related stigma, are explored in addition to the implications of the changing paradigm in HIV care today. Next, first-hand accounts of posttraumatic growth (PTG) are presented. The qualitative transformation in people’s sense of purpose and values, relationships to self and others, connection to spirituality and religion, and engagement in health-restoring behaviours are demonstrated as central to experiences of PTG among people living with HIV.
