Interview with Ashley McAulay
Ashley McAulay studied on the MA Music, Performance programme at the University of Salford, commencing in 2021 and completing 2022. Prior to this he studied music at the University of York (2018 - 2021).
Whilst studying at the University of Salford, he specialized in Flute, developing his interest in different styles such as Folk, Jazz and particularly, exploring contemporary classical music. He has composed a variety of pieces which have been performed by the Adelphi Contemporary Music Ensemble at Salford, This exploration eventually developed into his Final Project - The Beautiful/Horrible, a study in Indeterminate Graphic Score Notation, and the ways in which this form of notation can be exploited. His work within this project is influenced by composers such as Peter Maxwell-Davies, John Cage, Iannis Xennakis and others.
Since completing his studies he has worked with a variety of different ensembles and individual projects within the country mainly focused within Manchester. McAulay has performed at events such as Turn 2023, at Manchester's Contact Theatre, and has worked alongside musicians in Indian Rock Fusion Wingspread, showcasing fusion music at events such as Lancaster Jazz Festival, Envirolution Festival and Factory International.
Whilst being a First Study Flautist, McAulay has also been seen to play a variety of instruments such as the Alto Saxophone, Bass Guitar; Piano and more, and has performance experience on such within previous groups such as JERRY (a post punk-esque group) and Kosmus (Prog Metal) 2019.
McAulay currently works at Chethams School of Music as a Practice Administrator.
