Abstract

This event has been coordinated to commemorate 750th anniversary of the movement of the expelled Jewish communities of Worcester and Gloucester who came to Hereford in 1275.

The lecture will serve as an introduction to the history of the Jewish community in Hereford, which expanded significantly in the early 13th century following the expulsion of Jews from Worcester, Gloucester and Bath in 1225. Dr Luke Devine from the University of Worcester will share the history of the community and some of its individuals within Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Building upon Dr Devine's remarks, Dr Dean Irwin, visiting fellow at the University of Lincoln, will explore the records which allow us to access the Hereford Jewry. This will think about both records produced at Westminster, in the Chancery Roll, Receipt Rolls, and Plea Rolls of the Exchequer of the Jews, as well as those which were produced in Hereford(shire). He will also build upon Joe Hillaby's work to think about what might be next for the history of the medieval Hereford Jewry.
