Abstract

An animation composed by Dr Sabina Shah
Sultanate is a revivalism of Muslim women’s history from the Asian subcontinent, bringing to life an innovative means to capture a 13th century historical moment.

Using puppetry to create an animation inspired by traditional practices, Sultanate re-tells the legendary historical narrative of a woman’s perseverance for human equality as laid within the foundations of Islam branching into mysticism.

Sultanate is the first full length animation to be created by a Muslim woman about a Muslim woman in the UK, and it’ll be showing in the South Asia Gallery from Friday 21 March to Sunday 23 March. Run time is approximately 15 minutes.

The filmmaker, Dr Sabina Shah, will also be attending on Saturday 22 March to provide insight into the creation of the film and answer any questions.
