Talking History, a new series on Rajya Sabha TV is charting the past of fabulous Indian cities and their history.
In this episode, we revisit the rise and fall of Razia Sultana - the first ever female ruler of Delhi. She was chosen by her father Iltutmish, the Sultan of Dilli Sultanate ahead of her sons for she was said to have been much more able than them. Her era also witnessed major palace intrigue and rebellion, clashes amid the successors of Iltutmish.
Following her unseating, defeat and death, the throne of Delhi gradually went to one of Iltutmish's general Balban, who established his stronghold over the Turkic Mamluks and their durbar.
