Description As part of an ongoing research project funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the students participated in a workshop on addressing sanitation challenges in poverty-stricken areas of the Global South. Dr Rania Aburamadan, Visiting Professor of the University and Dr Athena Moustaka presented to the students the sanitation challenges faced by mobile populations in Jordan. The students were then asked to brainstorm innovative ideas addressing them. The projects delivered covered the importance of sanitation, community engagement, and sustainability in the design of a portable latrine.

Workshop on the Modernist and Vernacular 20th c Architectural Heritage of the Mediterranean: Bold and Unapologetic.

Description Bold and Unapologetic.
Countries of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean basin
have been sites of continuous experimentation, innovation, and
adaptation during the 20th century. The different location,
climate, heritage, and urban typologies of the region have
allowed local architects to push the boundaries, and become
more influenced by historical and cultural factors, in contrast to
Modernist architecture in the North which has been more
influenced by industrialization, urbanization, and technological
advances. Despite the unique character of 20thC Architecture
in the region, many of these buildings are now at risk due to
neglect, lack of maintenance, and changing cultural values.
The workshop aims to bring together researchers and experts
in 20th Century structures from vernacular to modernist, to
explore the challenges facing the restoration, conservation,
and preservation of this heritage.
We expect the following themes to emerge from the workshop:
Significance and cultural value of endangered architecture
in the Mediterranean
Challenges of preserving and enhancing modernist and
vernacular architecture
Ideas and best practices for the conservation and
enhancement of architecture in the Mediterranean
Role of modernist architecture in the development of
Mediterranean cities and its impact on urban planning
Policies and strategies for the preservation and
enhancement of 20thC architecture in the Mediterranean.
Opportunities for sustainable and adaptive reuse of
relevant buildings
Strategies for promoting awareness of 20thC architecture
in the Mediterranean to a wider audience.
Universities/organizations participated: University of Cyprus, National Technical University of Athens, Cyprus University of Technology, University of Salford, Historic England, etc.
