Dr Christina Buckingham
Biography | I am a design researcher with an interest in interactive interpretation design for museums, galleries, and heritage sites, particularly those linked to industrial heritage, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and environmental sustainability. My work aims to enhance access, engagement, and lifelong learning through innovative and participatory approaches. My research is deeply rooted in the field of purposeful play, intergenerational engagement and participatory interpretation design. I explore how interactive and engaging methods can transform the way people connect with heritage and culture. By focusing on the social impact of positive engagement, I investigate how these experiences can foster a sense of place and strengthen community connections. I am particularly passionate about the potential of heritage and cultural sites to serve as platforms for informal learning and community building. My work examines how thoughtfully designed interpretive experiences can not only educate but also inspire and empower individuals, encouraging them to become active participants in their cultural and environmental heritage. Through my research, I aim to contribute to the development of innovative, sustainable and inclusive interpretive practices that support diverse audiences. I believe that by making heritage and culture more accessible and engaging, we can promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of our shared history and environment, ultimately leading to a more connected, aspirational and informed society. My PhD centred on collaborative practice research with the Science and Industry Museum and a project that involved the exploration of family-friendly exhibition interpretation and prototyping connected to steam engine science. I have also worked commercially for over 15 years as an interactive interpretation designer, developing outputs for a range of heritage and third-sector clients including The Postal Museum, the Canal & River Trust and the Royal Collection Trust. |
