Abstract

Although there is considerable interest within the organizational research methods literature in researcher reflexivity, little attention has been paid to participant reflexivity, here defined as the reflexive considerations of research participants that have been stimulated by their involvement in research. This paper explores the responses of 32 participants to using photo-elicitation as part of a project exploring their daily / episodic experiences of work-life balance and conflict. Their responses suggested that involvement in the project led to participants thinking reflexively about their own work-life balance and in some cases, planning action as a result. We explore the important methodological and ethical issues for researchers arising from participant reflexivity and argue that an understanding of the phenomenon enables both greater insight into research findings but also in to the impact of organizational research more generally upon those who choose to participate within it.
