Abstract
This chapter focuses on the human resource issues faced in the “always on” VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world. With all of the benefits and flexibility of mobile digital working and data-driven management, this can also have negative consequences for organisations and their employees if not managed correctly. This chapter outlines a number of these issues and some potential ways to manage this. Aside from speeding up responses, “always on” mobile communications could also create a superficial form of responsiveness. Responding to messages on a mobile could mean that workers react quickly but perhaps less accurately or in depth as when you have time to digest to create a more informed opinion. To drive internal innovation and encourage the greatest impact from face-to-face time the “always on” perspective must therefore be challenged. Sequential-tasking and maker time encourages focused activities around a single task that gets “things” done and supports improved staff well-being.
