Abstract

Both of the titles discussed here represent significant firsts. Scotland in Definition is the first book to chart the lexicographical history of two of Scotland’s languages—Scots and Scottish Gaelic—and in doing so it illuminates the progress of projects and ideas that have bequeathed a significant legacy to ongoing scholarship. Jamieson’s Dictionary of Scots provides a detailed analysis of the contribution made by one of the pioneers of Scottish lexicography.
