Abstract
The Moody Mallard is an up-beat solo for cornet and brass band in a Latin-American style. The work is percussive throughout and the opening theme takes inspiration from the mambo whilst the second introduces the stylistic elements that we associate with the tango. There is a haughtiness present in most Latin music which is reminiscent to the persona of many birds but most noticeable in the duck known as the Mallard. To most people, the male or drake is the most recognisable of common ducks with his squat, inverted neck, white collar and glossy green head.
