Biography | From 1994 Dan developed a career as semi-professional performer, playing double bass, sousaphone and bass saxophone with a number of jazz, mainstream and swing ensembles based in London and West Midlands, including the internationally acclaimed Pasadena Roof Orchestra. During this period he also developed a reputation as a composer, arranger and conductor of brass and wind bands. In 2003 he enrolled on the Band Musicianship course at the University of Salford, studying composition, arranging and orchestration under Prof. Peter Graham and jazz arranging techniques with John Harper. He received his first commercial success arranging 'That’ll Do' for the Black Dyke Band as part of his final year arranging portfolio. Since graduating, Dan has had competition works selected for regional, national and international competitions from 2007 to the present day. He has held residencies at Cory Band, Black Dyke Band, and Grimethorpe Colliery Band, offering him the opportunity to collaborate with the likes of Karl Jenkins, Tolga Kashif, Wycliffe Gordon and James Morrison. His work has been performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world, including Sidney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, The Royal Albert Hall, Grieg Hall - Norway, Toyama Prefecture Cultural Hall - Japan and KKL-Luzern. Dan is currently Lecturer in Music at the University of Salford but continues to compose innovative works for some of the leading brass, concert bands and brass soloists globally as part of his continuing research interests. |
Research Interests | As a composer, Dan's primary interest is in repertoire development for both brass and wind band. He continues to explore alternative composition techniques that seek to challenge current methodologies used in band composition. More recently, his research has focused on grassroots level and youth band practices, an area that struggles to remain relevant within the interests of 21st century participators and listeners, impacting on the sustainability of the movement as a whole. His research looks to collaborate with other mediums, art, poetry, literature and music technology, exploring the possibilities of more immersive final 'product's' that is hoped will increase the appeal of brass and wind bands to younger generations. |
