Abstract
The Northern Voices project is an Arts Council England funded Research and Development project aimed at discovering the ways that regionl varieties of English could be incorporated into the operatic voice. The composer collaborated with renowned poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan in developing wok for a specifically South Yorkshire accent and the authors collaborated with singers from Heritage Opera in making the accent audible. The pieces were rewritten to incorporate insights from the workshop process. The four songs resulting from the process were premiered in March 2015.
