Abstract

This paper explores the administrative processes which resulted in the production of the scrutiny rolls prior to 1275-6. In so doing, it argues for the need to distinguish between acknowledgements of debt (products of the urban environment) and scrutiny rolls (products of royal auditing). In tracing the history of the scrutiny process, from 1240 onwards, it argues for the need to reassess the relationship between town and crown in relation to Jewish moneylending activities.
