Social dialogue is defined by the ILO to include all types of negotiation, consultation or simply exchange of information between, or among, representatives of governments, employers and workers, on issues of common interest relating to economic and social policy. It can shape the ways in which automation affects work organisation, workforce skills, working conditions and health and safety at work, and the monitoring of data protection.
The covid-19 pandemic accelerated the digitalisation of the business world by up to seven years and while digitalisation has been viewed by some charities as primarily a vehicle for engaging with current and prospective supporters, it also offers fresh avenues to engage with service users. There has been resistance to the holistic introduction of technology within this sector despite the fact that at a workplace level, the introduction of automated processes can be monitored and negotiated by worker representatives and management to ensure that both employers and workers benefit from their introduction.
This paper will measure the level of digitalisation of charitable organisations across European countries, assessing the impact social dialogue can have so that digital transformation has positive implications for working conditions and therefore collective employment and workplace relations.
