Ensuring the dissemination of accurate and up-to-date product information is crucial for enhancing safety and efficiency within the
construction industry. Recent legislative initiatives, such as the Construction Products Regulation, highlight the urgent need for
digitalisation and improved data exchange in the sector. However, existing practices are plagued by inconsistencies, hindering
accessibility and reliability. The fragmented nature of the industry further aggravates these challenges, posing avoidable risks that
can result in tragic events.
In response to these pressing issues, a pioneering digital solution, called SmartScan, has been designed, developed, and tested to
streamline access to validated and verified construction product information. Based on GS1 international standards, SmartScan
offers a unified approach to product identification and online information retrieval. By seamlessly linking the Global Trade Item
Number (GTIN), encapsulated within product barcodes, with comprehensive digital product data hosted on manufacturers'
websites, our platform empowers stakeholders across the construction supply chain.
Whether it's a tradesperson requiring installation guidelines, a homeowner seeking product operational manuals, a procurement
team examining product certificates, or a site manager verifying product origin, SmartScan facilitates effortless access to vital
information. Empowering users to make informed decisions through the simple act of scanning construction product barcodes with
a smartphone, our solution ensures compatibility and ease of access while championing the widespread adoption of barcode
technology throughout the construction sector.
The methodology employed and the results obtained in the design, development, and evaluation of SmartScan will be
comprehensively presented, offering valuable insights for future digital innovations within the construction sector.
