Florence Laino
This graphic novel about the Battle of Waterloo was created for the UK-based charity Waterloo Uncovered and featured in the second volume of their annual project review, covering the period from 2017 to 2018. Authored by Florence Laino and illustrated by Dr. Juan Hiriart, the comic presents an innovative approach to public historical dissemination, merging academic insights with visual storytelling to engage a broad and diverse audience.
Designed as both an educational tool and an accessible entry point into the Waterloo Uncovered project, the comic provides the historical context needed to understand the project's broader aims—an interdisciplinary initiative that combines archaeology with veteran support. It illustrates the key events of the 1815 battle, complementing the more traditional reporting found in the Project Review, which documents significant archaeological findings and highlights the experiences of veterans, students, and researchers involved in the annual excavation.
This piece was also included in the exhibition "Waterloo Remodelled" at the National Army Museum, held in London from October 20-23, 2021.
