Mr Juan Ferriz-Papi
Biography | My professional activity was developed in Spain (1997-2009), working as a site and construction manager, H&S coordinator and quality control for the construction of new dwellings, residential blocks and other commercial buildings. As well, I acted as a surveyor for existing buildings, residential and commercial, public and private, aftersales office, surveys to court, etc. I also participated as funder of one SME (2002-2009) to provide technical services to construction companies. I have been working as a Lecturer since 2001. I started at the University of Alicante as a part-time Lecturer (2001-2009), and later as an assistant Lecturer (2009-2013). I participated in different projects, including Climate KIC – Pioneers into Practice. I moved to the UK in 2015, when I started as a full-time Lecturer at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. During that period (2015-2020), I worked at the School of Built and Natural Environments and developed different activities about teaching, research and management at Higher Education. I created links with the construction industry in Wales and the UK as well as other universities and research institutions, nationally and internationally. In May 2020, I started as a Lecturer in Building Surveying at the University of Salford, where I continue developing my career in both lecturing and research. Currently, I am programme leader of the MSc Sustainable Buildings, and running several (national and international) funded projects in circular economy in construction and embodied carbon in construction materials, participating in the UKGBC Circular Forum and Greater Manchester sustainable Consumptin and Prodcution Group, representing the University of Salford at the CIRIA Council, and collaborating with Energy House and NERIC Research Centres. |

Research Interests | My main research interest is about sustainable construction, carbon assessment and circular economy. I have worked in different projects and topics, such as: fresh concrete recycling; building conservation in Old Havana; energy efficiency and carbon footprint on university campus; life cycle assessment in construction; fused recycled glass performance and applications; construction mixed recycled aggregates higher-value uses. Currently, I am leading the team at the Universityo f Salford for a Horizon Europe project about automated solutions in construction waste management (>£0.75million value). Additionally, I have been integrated in the Energy House team to develop industry research collaborations regarding low impact materials and embodied carbon in new and existing buildings. My aspiration is to create, strengthen and consolidate networks from the University of Salford, nationally and internationally, in the field of circular economy and low impact materials during the following years and provide innovation and support to the construction industry to achieve zero (energy and waste) targets. Particularly, I am interested in the following research topics: - Circular economy: new innovative materials, reuse and recycling, higher value products, new markets and business models, standards and policies for zero waste in construction, circularity assessment methods - Construction waste management: waste traceability, waste reduction on site - End-of-service-life of materials and buildings: material exposure and degradation, maintenance, repair and replacement analysis and processes, inspection techniques - Building whole life carbon emissions: assessment methods for new and existing buildings, environmental data management, end of life assessment, low carbon technologies, building retrofitting - Embodied carbon of materials: assessment methods, end-of life scenarios, carbon off-set, materials choice analysis, standardization and certification |
Teaching and Learning | My expertise has been developed following my teaching commitments. I taught a varied range of modules at the University of Alicante (2001-2013): construction materials, quality control, heritage building conservation, sustainable construction, etc. At the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, I covered a number of modules linked to Building Surveying, Project and Construction Management, Quantity Surveying and Civil Engineering programmes. Some of these modules were about construction methods, site management, and basic structural design. Sustainable construction has comprised several of these modules as well, including BREEAM assessment. Since I started at University of Salford, I have been mainly involved in the Building Surveying programme, teaching about Building Technology, Building Surveying Practice and Design Studies. Currently, I am leading the MSc Sustainable Buildings which started in September 2023. |
