Dr Jonathan Owens
Biography | Dr Jonathan D Owens is a Senior Lecturer in Operations Management within Salford Business School, and a registered Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council. He has worked in the UK higher education sector for over twenty-five years, joining Salford in 2014, from Lincoln University where he was Director of the CILT and CIPS accredited MSc Logistics Management degree programme. He is the Placements Lead within the Business school and integrated and embedded placements within a UG degree programme support students’ awareness of professional development, through the development of human skills and technical knowledge and expertise to enhance their employability skills and awareness. UG students come back into their final year more clearly aligned to their career path. For PG students there are three routes for a placement; a 3-month internship, 6 or 12 month placement. He also the the Young Enterprise (YE) lead for the Start-Up Programme on the 'Young Enterprise' Level 5 module delivered across the UG Business Suite. He introduced this module in 2020 as it allows the students to set up their own company and make their first company decisions as a team in their degree programme specialist area. Students learn for their experience working in team with their peers and mentors to gain valuable experience working in project teams on project launches, controlling finances and share prices to develop and give them an early insight of valuable entrepreneurial and enterprise skills, leading into focus on their future employability skills post-graduation. This is currently a multi-award winning as our student alumni have been trailblazers, with one team 'hearNprotect' becoming the best start start up team in Europe 2022. Salford hosted the Young Enterprise UK Final in 2023, which coincided with YE's 60th Charter. HRH The Princess Royal accepted our initiation to attend this event and made such a big impact to student experience from across multiple HEI's.. He was made a Young Enterprise Ambassador in 2022. His research is predominantly in the fields of Operations Management, Lean, ERP and New Product Development (NPD) he has worked on numerous grants and enterprise projects. He is particularly interested in the cost and benefits of integrating current technologies into the NPD process, and how NPD could be understood more effectively and taught in a learning environment. He has published widely and is currently on the editorial review panel with four ABS ranked journals. In addition, he has held numerous visiting and external examiner posts in the field of Operations Management. Having been invited to be a Visiting Professor in Operations Management for the Tecnológico de Monterrey University, México and held numerous external examiner roles. |
