Abstract
An e-mail that reached Scotland Yard said: "I am ready to surrender myself to the authorities, even if it means immediate arrest". It came from the gangster, Ronnie Biggs, after 35 years since his legendary escape from prison. In spite of a modest role Biggs had played in the Royal Mail train robbery of the century in 1963, his life has been subject of intense interest among the British public.
